Since it’s national unveiling January 10th in New York City, the new Ella Fitzgerald stamp has received a warm reception at many smaller unveilings around the country. Just during the last week, the stamp featuring the legendary Jazz Singer has been displayed at ceremonies in Baltimore, Maryland and Raleigh, North Carolina, where the occasion was celebrated with performances by local Jazz artists. The Stamp is part of the United States Postal Service’s Black Heritage Series, and Fitzgerald is the 30th honoree to recieve a stamp with her likeness on the front. The honor is currently bestowed only to deceased African-Americans that have made a great impact on American History. She shares this honor with luminaries such as Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman who was on the first Black Heritage stamp released in 1978.
